Brick Slip Cladding Systems: Enhancing Aesthetics and Performance

DESIGN ASSISTANCE | PROJECT MANAGEMENT | QUICK TURNAROUND

Brick slip cladding systems have gained immense popularity in the construction industry as an innovative and visually appealing alternative to traditional brickwork. These systems offer numerous benefits, from cost-effectiveness to improved thermal insulation.

Brick slip cladding systems have emerged as a game-changer in modern construction practices. They provide the allure of traditional brickwork while offering added flexibility and efficiency during installation. These systems involve using thin layers of bricks, known as brick slips, that are mechanically fixed to a rail and to the exterior. Let’s delve deeper into this remarkable architectural solution.

What are Brick Slip Cladding Systems?

Brick slip cladding systems involve attaching brick slips to surfaces, mimicking a real brick wall. They enhance a building’s aesthetics and also provide protective functionality, shielding the structure’s framework from external elements.

Advantages of Brick Slip Cladding

  • Easy Installation: Installing these systems is straightforward, saving time and labour costs during construction.
  • Cost-Effective: Brick slips are often more budget-friendly than traditional brickwork, ideal for renovations and new projects.
  • Aesthetics: With diverse design options, brick slip cladding maintains quality while achieving desired looks.
  • Insulation: When paired with insulation, these systems enhance a building’s thermal performance.
  • Lightweight: Compared to full brick walls, brick slip cladding is lighter, easing the load on foundations and structures.

Different Types of Brick Slip Cladding Systems

There are several types of brick slip cladding systems available in the market, each catering to different construction requirements. Some popular options include:

MechSlip Brick Cladding Systems

MechSlip Brick Cladding Systems is an innovative and efficient method of installing brick cladding on buildings. This system utilises mechanically fixed brick slips cut from real bricks onto the building’s exterior surface. It provides the appearance of a traditional brick wall without the need for traditional bricklaying methods and means you can utilise the finish of the vast majority of bricks in the marketplace.

NaturAL-X Brick Cladding

NaturAL-X is an innovative mechanically-fixed brick cladding system used for exterior and interior wall applications. It uses specially extruded tiles to fit onto the system, available in a large range of colours and textures; and combines the natural appearance of brick with modern technology to create a durable, lightweight, and versatile solution for cladding projects.

MechSlip and NaturAL-X Brick Cladding Installation Process

Before starting the installation process, always refer to the manufacturer’s installation guidelines and specifications as they may have specific instructions that should be followed.

Here are the steps to follow for installing support brackets safely and securely:

  1. Make sure to install the support brackets at the recommended intervals.
  2. Secure the vertical rail support into place.
  3. Use the pre-space gauge tool to slide the horizontal rails into position.
  4. Fix them securely onto the vertical supports at the farthest ends.
  5. Install the brick slips by placing them in the larger slot of the upper rail restraint and using a brick spacer to create a perpendicular joint.
  6. Apply Parex mortar by injecting it into the perpendicular and bed joints.
  7. Use a tool to smooth out the mortar and create a neat joint profile.

Helping Hand System Setup:

  1. Get the necessary Helping Hand brackets: Obtain single aluminium brackets (40mm & 60mm), a single aluminium bracket (90mm – 300mm), and a double aluminium bracket (90mm – 300mm).
  2. Install double aluminium bracket: Place it at the bottom corners, middle of the flat wall, and secure it with nails. Repeat this process on the right, left, and centre using single brackets. Also, install at the top corners and middle.
  3. Attach Helping Hand Mullion: Secure the L Rail Helping Hand Mullion vertically to the brackets, providing a stable base for the cladding.

Brick Rail Setup:

  1. Place stainless-steel starter rails vertically along the edges. Secure them to Helping Hand brackets using appropriate fasteners.
  2. Insert T Rails horizontally: These act as horizontal support. Start with the top and bottom placements.
  3. Remove long starter rails: Nail T Rails in place. Use a short starter rail for the bottom and middle support.

Brick Slips Installation:

  1. Begin with standard brick slips: Place right-handed header on the right side of the flat wall.
  2. Install stretcher on the left side.
  3. Repeat with left-handed headers on the left side until installation is complete.
  4. Finally, install mortar to finish the installation.
